The Mountain Art of Arnold Shives

Artwork by Arnold Shives; essays by Edward Lucie-Smith, John Grande, Toni Onley, & others

Arnold Shives is one of Canada’s foremost printmakers.  The beautifully produced book, illustrated with 75 full-colour plates, is the first thorough look at his career and art.  Essays and appreciations by John Grande, Bill Jeffries, Edward Lucie-Smith, Darrin J. Martens, Toni Onley, and Glenn Woodsworth complement the artwork.

Mountains, glaciers, rivers, forests and ocean are all part of Arnold Shives’ language.  They have been his motifs for the past fifty years of painting and printmaking.  Shives captures the rough edges of our mountains and suggest that their beauty can really only be seen by looking at those rough sides.  Mountain morphology and structure takes precedence of beauty in his art, and yet is those structures that are the beautiful bold strokes delineating our mountains.  Tough mountains can, in Shives’ art, yield strong images in which the picture may be as unresolved as the mountain geography.

Arnold Shives

Arnold Shives has been climbing B.C.’S mountains since the 1950s and has made them the focus of his art since 1960.  Arnold has exhibited his work nationally and internationally for more than thirty years.  His work is in dozens of public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.  He lives in North Vancouver with his wife, Sue.
