A Prophet at Home

An Intimate Memoir of J.S. Woodsworth, with Three
of his Previously Unpublished Letters

By Charles J. Woodsworth

James Shaver Woodsworth (1847 - 1942) was a minister in the social gospel and Methodist traditions, longshoreman, Member of Parliament, leader of the CCF, and pacifist.  This short memoir, written in the late 1940's by his oldest son, is published here for the first time.  It is not a biographical sketch but rather a series of anecdotes, observations, and interpretations seen from Charles’ perspective.

During his long absences from home, J.S. Woodsworth wrote many letters to family members.  Three of these letters, previously unpublished, are included in this volume and shed new light on the development of his thought.

With an introduction by Charles’ nephew, Glenn Woodsworth, and with unpublished photos of both Charles and JSW.

Charles J. Woodsworth

Charles Woodsworth (1909 - 2005) was a journalist, expert on far-eastern affairs, and editor-in-chief of the Ottawa Citizen before he was fired by publisher Robert Southam over differences in editorial policy.  In 1956 he began a second career as a Canadian diplomat, with postings to Vietnam, South Africa, and other countries.
