The Coast Mountains Trilogy

Mountain Poems 1957 - 1971

By Dick Culbert
illustrations by Arnold Shives
introduction by Glenn Woodsworth

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Dick Culbert was one of the most accomplished explorers and mountaineers in Canada.  During that time, he also wrote a substantial amount of poetry.  These poems are a welcome addition to the small body of distinctively Canadian mountaineering literature.

Although stylistically influenced by Rudyard Kipling and Robert Service, Culbert’s poems are more in the tradition of Earle Birney’s David.  They are meditations on our relationship with nature and on the transition from youth to maturity that we all experience.
